San Marco: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Jacksonville
Nestled along the banks of the St. Johns River, the San Marco neighborhood in Jacksonville, FL, boasts a unique blend of history, charm, and modern living. As a real estate agent in Jacksonville for many years, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the growth and revitalization of this historic district. From its Mediterranean-style architecture to its lush parks, San Marco truly embodies a sense of warmth and community.
Historical Significance
When I first set foot in San Marco, I immediately sensed the rich history surrounding this neighborhood. Developed in the early 20th century by renowned developer Telfair Stockton, San Marco was created with elegance in mind. The Italian Renaissance Revival style influenced the neighborhood, which can still be seen in some of the beautifully preserved architecture.
The area that is now San Marco has a connection to the Civil War as well. It was once home to Villa Alexandria, a beautiful estate that was used by Confederate troops as a hospital. Although the estate no longer stands, its influence on the neighborhood can still be felt through its reputation as an upscale and fashionable development.
Whenever I visit, I notice a strong sense of community among the residents, many of whom take great pride in their properties and the neighborhood’s history. A visit to the Historic Jacksonville area showcases the heritage and charm of San Marco and the surrounding neighborhoods. You can find many locally-owned shops, restaurants, and entertainment options in these historic parts of town.

One evening, my husband and I enjoyed a date night at Matthew’s Restaurant in the heart of historic San Marco. The elegant ambiance, amazing service, and incredible dishes left me in awe. If you’re in the mood for Italian, the Pasta Radiatori is phenomenal. And don’t skip the crispy Brussels sprouts!
It’s no surprise that Matthew’s has been elevating the fine dining scene in Jacksonville for over 20 years.
But the San Marco food scene isn’t limited to this one culinary gem. There are plenty of other amazing restaurants to explore. I had the opportunity to sink my teeth into some of the best brick oven pizzas at V Pizza. They serve classic pies made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. If you have a craving for Southern comfort food, don’t miss out on Maple Street Biscuit Company, a must-try in the area.
